The Fed left rates unchanged, as expected, but forecast at least one rate cut this year. That was enough for a small relief rally on equity markets, while bond yields drifted lower. The US inflation reading was in line with expectations, coming in at 3.3%, with the Fed expectations for the rate to fall back to the target 2%. The US economy is deteriorating back into recessionary territory, which will significantly improve the inflation outlook, but the political timing will not be welcome. German inflation edged back up to 2.4%, heading in the wrong direction, so analysts will be very wary. The softer bond yields and US Dollar allowed the GBP to rally back towards 1.2800, while the EUR traded 1.0730.
The weaker reserve also allowed some recovery in commodity currencies, with the AUD pushing back up towards 0.6650, while the NZD jumped back above 0.6150, Markets remain focused on inflation and growth.
